I've had the worst luck at estate sales over the past few months and I really wasn't wanting to get up for this morning's, but I felt like I had to go since it promised vintage clothing and was only three miles away. But unlike the sales I've gone to lately the clothing promised really was vintage! Well, mostly '60s, but cute anyway--some little lace dresses and a tweed jacket and some '60s coats. The best thing I found by far was this little goldish-yellow jacket . . . Supposedly it had belonged to an actress in the '60s; her daughters were in charge of the estate sale and--in terrific New York accents--kept trying to get me to buy a similar green coat instead, saying that it was in much better shape, but I only had eyes for the yellow one. And of course when I got it home I saw that they were right--it needs a good drycleaning and the hem's completely undone.
I really don't mind paying a little extra to have it freshened up though because I think it might be the '60s jacket I've been looking for. My love of yellow coats started up almost three years ago when I found a little Aquascutum coat at the thrift store. I wore that thing as much as you can get away with wearing a yellow coat . . . it may have been bright, but back then I was into much brighter things than I am now, and whenever people made jokes about how they could see me coming from blocks away I just fake-laughed them off. And then when my style started to gravitate towards more subtle colors and less graphic shapes I put the coat in the back of my closet and forgot about it.

The Aquascutum thrift store find . . . . . Trying on a Milly coat in the dance club mall . . . . . Elizabeth Hooks in an old issue of Lucky.
But then last year some time I saw the most amazing goldenrod-y yellow '60s coat worn by an Anthropologie fashion merchandiser in Lucky Magazine, and it sent me on a hunt for a new version of a '60s yellow coat. I ended up selling the Aquascutum coat, but never found a replacement 'till today. The new one is a bit more subtle in color than the more mod one that I sold, but I think that the best thing about it is its shape--smaller and more fitted, with a daintier (I kind of hate that word, but it fits!) collar and sleeves, and then little rhinestone covered buttons that are sort of old lady-ish, but maybe in a good way. And then the length is absolutely perfect, which you really can't tell from the photos since the hem's hanging loose and looking terrible. Actually the whole thing's in pretty bad shape right now, but by Fall I'm going to do my best to have it all dry-cleaned and tailored up and ready to put on my blog. And I'm crossing my fingers that by then my hair will be long again, too--seeing photos with my hair all long and kind of ratty makes me wish I never cut it!

And when your hair is long again, you'll miss the short hair! lol... well, at least that's how *I* am ;)
You look adorable in both the old and new coat. I wanted to buy the one you put up for sale, as I have a deep love of yellow coats myself! ...What is it with yellow, hm? ^_^
I adore the buttons and the sleeves! I love the colour yellow, so summery and happy
it's fantastic!
Ohh, I long for a brightly coloured coat!
i love the colour of your coat and i love your shoes :)

That's a great find. I really want to go to some estate sales, but I've never really been able to find any good ones in my area. I wonder if you would have any advice for finding them?

no, no, no your short hair was sooo stunning, don't regret it for a second.
i have this yellow coat i got for like ten bucks and i keep updating the buttons on it every season. the original matching ones became bright heart-shaped buttons, last fall they were golden with little anchors, this spring i just ripped them all off and now in the fall i think i'm going to go with some nice wooden ones. it's my favorite and has proved to be as versatile as me, which, for a yellow coat, is pretty fantastic!
I pincurled my hair last night and seeing those pictures of your long hair reminds me of my own long, now-curly, slightly frizzy locks! I have enjoyed having silent film star hair for the last day, that's for sure. (: The third photo, of the Lucky magazine goldenrod coat, reminds me so much of my absolute favorite vintage-inspired coat, even though mine is red. It's a lovely coat. Your "new" one is so adorable though! I just love the buttons.
Loving the yellow coat. You are so lucky you look good in yellow. I can only wear it on my feet.
oh my gosh is that cute! i love the three little high-up buttons...it's VERY ladylike...looks like you to me...
i love yellow :)!
What an awesome coat! And you are right, the hem and tailoring can be easily done by any dry cleaning or alterations place. Looking forward to seeing pics of it all done up!
love the yellow.
and very cute buttons.
nice shoes!
xx
Yellow has never been my favourite colour but it suits you. I like your hair both lengths! I picked up Peppermint magazine today and you made a great cover girl for them! xx
Your short hair looks fantastic- not that you don't look fabulous with long hair- I love your whole look and the short silent movie style hair finishes it off so well. Really enjoy reading your blog

I love the yellow coat and your hair!
Fantastic coat! It looks wonderful on you. I have a similar orange shantung coat that I wear all the time in season- that cut is just so flattering.
yellow jacket is perfect
you wear it sooo well
The rhinestone buttons are wonderful!
I like the short hair, but the big hair from the dance club mall photo make me wish my hair would grow faster!
So lovely!!The coat is so cheery and vibrant you can't help but feel happy looking at it!
Hooray for yellow coats! It's gorgeous.

Hrm... I think I may have that coat, or an analogue of it.
I've always envied your hair... it's so Scarlett O'Hara meet Zooey Deschanel!! =) But, I'm like that too. I have blonde hair, but as soon as I dye it back to my natural brunette I miss my Veronica Lake-inspired locks! ;)
The buttons totally make the coat! I have a soft spot for anything yellow... especially purses and coats!
That yellow coat is so rad! I'm so glad you have a replacement now. I have a yellow Burberry trench, so we can be yellow coat twins.
Gorgeous coat! I agree, yellow coats are fun. I have a vintage-esque mustard one that I scored for $9 - Forever 21 though, but still :)
