Inspiration: Autochromes by Etheldreda Janet Laing

Looking at old autochromes online never fails to make me wish I could go back in time  . . .  The colors in them may not be quite realistic, but they're usually prettier than real life--mostly pastel and soft focus and a little faded from time.  Everything looks so nice and lazy . . .  women walk around gardens in their cotton and lace dresses, with their hair done up like Edwardian theater stars, protected from the sun by straw hats and parasols.  Or they sit around on abnormally green lawns, looking a little bored, but in an idealistic and romantic sort of a way, as if they have all the time in the world to sit around.  Which to me sounds like heaven.

At least that's the sort of world that Etheldreda Janet Laing captured in her Edwardian era photos.  I found her work on this amazing site devoted to autochromes called The Dawn of Colour, which has photos that go far beyond my romantic autochrome generalizations, with subjects much more exotic and maybe a little more realistic than Laing's pretty scenes of country life.  But for some reason I like Laing's autochromes best.

Apparently Laing was the wife of a well-to-do barrister in Oxford, living in a "large well-appointed house" complete with a darkroom for her photography hobby.  She mainly took photos of her two daughters, who always look weirdly calm and serene, with their hair always in place.  They look like the sort of sisters who've never had a fight in their lives, though I doubt that was the case.   They probably fought just as much as my sisters and I did growing up, and I bet that they got annoyed with their mother for making them pose with bouquets of flowers.  But don't they look like they belong in some wonderful old escapist, Edwardian novel?

oh my goodness the timing on your posting these is perfect! I'm reading an Edwardian animal rights activist/artist lady's biography right now and these are the perfect addition to my oh-so Edwardian fashion inspiration!! :D

these are just amazing. I found some great old snapshots at the antique expo the other day and I have one that reminds me so much of these! Not in these dreamy colors, but it's easy to imagine. I'll scan it soon!

I am going to spend so much time looking at these!

Such lovely colours - just like a fairytale version of life.

The grey dress with the white frilly collar makes me consider going back to a market stall in town. They have a dress just like it but so far I've been undecided. Especially due to the lady running the place prophesying: "This dress is for somebody very special" when I tried it on. That sort of gave me the willies a bit.

Oh these are dreamily perfect for summer. I love the colors...and especially the one on the bottom right of the girl standing under tall flowers. Wouldn't it be nice to have all the time in the world to lounge and look serene?:)

Ohhh thank you for posting these! They always kind of confuse my brain and eyes, because they look to me so new! They look as though they were only taken days ago, for a magazine or something because of the crispness (kind of) and the colors.

I always think that if I got the chance to go back in time, I'd actually be disappointed to see that it isn't all black and white or faded color...

Oh my! Those are so beautiful! Everything about them is just so lovely and dreamlike... what a beautiful time that was aesthetically. Their clothes are just gorgeous. It makes me want to pull out my sewing machine and some muslin and start sewing up pretty, loose Edwardian frocks. :)

I don't have a blogspot account, but I just wanted to let you know I've been following your blog for months now! You are just as cute as a button. And from what you have to say (or write, I suppose) you seem like a wonderfully sweet, intelligent person. And, of course, you're a great fashion inspiration! Anyway, I hope a tiny little compliment and awareness of adoration from a stranger can brighten your day just a tad!
