Vintage Knitting

I don't think I've ever done a post here on my love of knitting.  Probably because I haven't knit anything in a year--which is how old this blog is, I think (the poor old thing hit its one year birthday sometime last month without my even noticing).  I learned how to knit in college but never really got into the habit of knitting wearable clothes until it finally hit me that I could knit up vintage patterns in new yarns.  2 years ago, in my most obsessive knitting phase ever, I couldn't get enough of patterns from the '30s.  The sweaters above were made in that time when I used to knit for hours and hours every day while watching Busby Berkeley musicals.  It got strange after a while so I gave it up and got out of the habit.

My yarn and needles are stored away somewhere at the back of my messy closet, but I think want to drag them out and start knitting again.  And my inspiration, I kind of hate to admit, is a Sienna Miller movie!  Film stills from The Edge of Love have been surfacing over the last few months in numerous fashion blogs, and they are making me want to pair little '40s dresses with cable cardigans.

Hopefully more Edge of Love stills will show up on the internet for inspiration, because I don't think I want to see the movie (looks so dramatic!), but who knows.  This weird '40s clothing obsession I've had lately might make me go see it.  Or at least rent it on dvd and put it on mute.

PS--here are a few sites offering lovely (and free!) knitting patterns:

Photos: Stills from The Edge of Love, cutest bobble cardigan in the world from the equally cute Cherry Blossom Girl, the (late '30s) cable knit cardigan I'll probably end up knitting.

I am so jealous of people who can knit! I'm too impatient and can't get the tension right. You should start knitting again!

oh!!! I absolutely adore knitting. I adore it but I am useless at it.

I even own a knitting machine, about 50 spools of wool, patterns and books from the 50s/60s and god knows what else. but I never learned how to use it properly... even after lessons i could only do straight lines...
I really admire people who can actually make something successfully!!

Those jumpers are gorgeous!! you should definately start up again.

I didn't know you were a knitter!! And those are seriously adorable. Very well done! I will have to check out your vintage pattern links...

I have some vintage patterns from the 60s (knit scooter dresses, yaaay). I haven't done any knitting in ages, either, but it's definitely been back on my mind lately, which is odd because it's over 90 degrees today... yet I found myself thinking about fall sweaters and picking out wool colors.

oh wow! I simply adore both those sweaters--you are so talented! :) I get the knitting bug about once-a-year in the fall, but have yet to actually finish a sweater. lol.

I love the lace pattern stockings I saw on your link for Vintage Purls. I have never knit before, perhaps I should learn.

i adore the red one especially! did that come from a pattern online?

have you heard of the three hour sweater? it's from the '30's. it took me more than three hours but still knits up pretty quickly:

Wow, the red sweater is really cute!

Major cuteness factor despite the bulkiness I've always come to associate with sweaters.

o, i also forgot to mention yesterknits:

i've never ordered from them, but they've got some really, really cute ones from the '30's and '40's!

Those sweaters are beautiful! I'm so impressed, I am hopeless at knitting! Thankyou so much for the pattern links, I do love old patterns, it's so exciting to think that you are making something that is at once old and new!

I love knitting too! but i don't knit to make clothes, I uses it as a stress-reliever. i can only really make scarves!

Hmmm, Sienna looks pretty good in that movie. Style-wise, at least. We all know she's not a talented actress.

I tried to knit a scarf for my boyfriend once but I got too frustrated and ended up throwing it in the fire. I wish I had your patience.
I did however just acquire a sweet little vintage knit which I've been looking for all my life. x

The sweaters are beautiful! I had to laugh at the idea of someone obsessively knitting while watching hours of musicals... if David Lynch turned fashionista, I think that would be a scene in one of his new movies.

Funny timing, I just bought a vintage knitting pattern book on eBay last week!

I can't wait to see what you knit up next. :)

i love following vintage patterns. its such an easy way to get exactly what you're looking for, in exactly the right color, and totally perfect condition.

it almost feels like cheating. :)

I'd love to be able to knit my own little cardigans! The best thing I've ever knit is a very odd looking scarf *cry*

You know, I went to see "The Edge of Love" just for the costumes. And I have to say... it was worth it if you love pretty Forties dresses. Really - costumes are DIVINE.

Oh, I'm so jealous!! I'm not able to knit at all...I tried so many times but it's definitely not for me :-( I'm not even able to sew...I would love to make some simple dresses but everything I tried before ended looking...weird!

Did you make the two adorable pieces in the first photo? In that case you're my new idol!!

Penny said...

Oh my god!!! You made them?? They are beautiful! I wish I had your knitting skills
